Last Tuesday (Oct. 6), after the House of Representatives, the Senate has now also approved the Temporary Notification Application Act Covid-19. This law governs the legal basis for the use of the CoronaMelder app. There is also an anti-abuse provision in the law to ensure that use of the app is always voluntary.

Minister Hugo de Jonge: “Nice that the use of CoronaMelder is embraced by both Chambers. We must do everything possible to suppress the spread of the virus. The app can play an important role in this, high time to start using it in the Netherlands now.”

The app complements the GGD’s regular source and contact investigation and allows people to stop the spread of the virus. The app protects privacy by not storing user information or a user’s location. Moreover, people should never be forced, directly or indirectly, by anyone to use the app.
